The Rhinogau range of mountain lie in the southern half of Snowdonia and are conveniently arranged in a long 10k line between the village of Maentwrog in the north and Barmouth in the south. The northern half of the range is extremely rough and difficult to access, and as a result it’s much quieter than other part of Snowdonia.
Rhinog Fach is located about halfway down the length of the range and despite being one of the lower of the Rhinogau hills, it is one of the most striking . The painting shows its impressive southern side, towering as it does over the equally dramatically located Llyn Hywel. From this point southwards the range becomes softer and gentler.
