The headwall of Cwm Idwal is a steep bastion of rock, in places hundreds of feet high. There is only one walking route up this barrier, shown in the painting as a diagonal light coloured streak on the left of the image. Left of centre is the infamous black defile known as the Devil's Kitchen. The peak on the top right of the painting is Y Garn one of the Welsh 3000 foot peaks.
