Cwm Idwal is a glaciated cwm formed thousands of years ago. A glaciated cwm is normally characterised as a bowl shape with one side open (where the glacier flowed down) Opposite the open end is often a steep headwall, and in the case of Cwm Idwal ringed by bristling crags. At the centre of this headwall is a great cleft, Y Twll Du. (the black hole) but known in English as The Devil's Kitchen.
