Ballast island just on the outskirts of the harbour at Porthmadog is exactly that, an island formed from the ballast discharged from the old sailing schooners after returning empty to the their home port. At its hay day there was a wharf with a crane for unloading all the ballast. The person in charge of the crane lived on the island with his family. The remains of the house can still seen, now overgrown by vegetation.
