One of the great advantages of wandering the mountains on your own is that you are able to freely explore situations off the beaten track. This painting is typical of such a situation. Normally on a high ridge the slope is concave as it falls down to the valley which tends to hide any detail below, but by making your way down the slope away from the path the valley below will unfold beneath your feet. This is what has happened here, I walked off the path which linked Penyroleuwen to Carnedd Dafydd to the very edge of the Nant Ffrancon valley and there across from me was Elidir Fawr and in front, Y Foel Goch. But what was also revealed which was hidden from view higher up was the precipitous north face of Y Foel Goch, and by not including the base of the cliff in the painting I have attempted to increase the sense of drama and unease.
