During the late 19th century and early 20th century Lliwedd became one of the most important cliffs in the development of rock climbing in the UK. In those early days rock climbing was the realm of the upper classes and when they climbed on Lliwedd they would stay more often than not at the Penygwryd hotel, later to became famous as the venue for the pre 1953 Everest expedition.
This watercolour, taken virtually from the front door of the hotel shows the twin peak of Lliwedd with the cliff in deep shadow beneath.
